(call) V&A Data Vis Residency (20170707)

Flight Patterns, 2005 – 2009, Aaron Koblin

V&A writes:

The Victoria & Albert Museum Research Institute (VARI) is inviting
nominations and applications for a yearlong embedded residency at the
Museum for practitioners working with data as their medium. The
appointed resident will be based at the V&A South Kensington’s
Research Department on a part-time basis between October 2017 and
October 2018.

The V&A holds considerable quantities of data and of information about
its collection objects, and digital infrastructures increasingly form
the connective tissue between objects, information, curators and
visitors – both in house and online. Artists working in code and as
developers are producing artworks, experiences and events with museum
data, creating visualisations, systems and software design, hackathons
and more by employing and repurposing digital tools and languages such
as (but not limited to) JavaScript, algorithms, GIS, text/image mining
and semantics.

Working with the multiple layers of collections information held in
the V&A Museum, we would like the VARI Embedded Resident to make
data-focused works that propose new points of entry, navigation and
engagement with both collections and the information that we hold
about them, eliciting meaningful forms of participation both onsite
and offsite, and by the widest range of possible publics.

Call No.2 for Web Residencies 2017 by Solitude & ZKM Curated by Claudia Maté

»Fractal Horses«

»There are only patterns, patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns. Patterns hidden by patterns. Patterns within patterns. If you watch close, history does nothing but repeat itself. What we call chaos is just patterns we haven’t recognized. What we call random is just patterns we can’t decipher.« Chuck Palahniuk

The second joint call for Web Residencies by Solitude & ZKM in 2017 is curated by net artist Claudia Maté who invites artists to challenge the multiplicity and tensions of patterns and chaos – in any art discipline such as visual, music, sculpture, games or writing.

Read the full text of the call here. The deadline is June 23, 2017. Find out more about the program Web Residencies here.

We look forward to receiving your application!

(award) AppArtAward 2017 (2017-05-07)

zkm writes:

After six successful competitions, we will celebrate the 7th AppArtAward this year. Once again, the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Cyberforum e.V. and their partners are looking for the best artwork in app format.

The AppArtAward is a first, internationally: Since 2011, it has awarded prizes to apps that represent advanced artistic applications – it is rare for global art collections to acquire apps. With the help of apps even fine arts have become mobile. The multi-mediality of this new medium allows to combine various genres: Musicians work in cooperation with visual artists, and fine artists include music and acoustics in their works. Besides artistic aspects, the creative integration and the use of options offered by new technologies are important.

Award Categories 2017:

Prize for Game Art
Prize for Sound Art
Prize for AppARTivism

Artists, designers and developers from all over the world are invited to submit their developments until May 7, 2017. Each award > has prize money of € 10,000.

The award ceremony takes place at ZKM | Karlsruhe, July 7, 2017, at 8 pm.

(lecture+performance) Salon Digital #4 / Christian Faubel: Subtlety is key – an Attempt for a fundamental critique of the digital metaphor

In this lecture performance I will re-stage an experimental
observation Christiaan Huygens made in the 17th century on the
synchronization of pendulum clocks. I argue that synchronizing
pendulums may serve as a model to explain similar phenomena in
organisms from synchronizing fireflies to finger tapping coordination
and turn taking in human communication. My critique of the digital
metaphor builds upon these synchronization phenomena and I claim that
the Turing machine comes short in explaining the subtle interactions
happening during synchronization. Based on this critique I will start
to elaborate an analogue framework that includes synchronization
phenomena and also has the potential for algorithmic structures.
