10:45 Introduction *Geschichtung*
In this workshop, I (Henrik) will introduce to you my concept of Geschichtung as a way of researching and aesthetic and discursively engaging with your topics of interest. At the end of the day you will present your own *Geschichtung* layered from the research materials you brought.
11:15 Workshop Part 01: Considering the ways of *Schichtung*
The first part of the workshop is straightforward. Take 15 minutes to examine your collected research materials and decide on a format to layer various kinds of materials. If you have mostly text and images you could think about designing a xerox-copy zine; if your materials are video and audio files, you could edit a video essay or create a soundscape; if you have collected physical objects and books, you could arrange them in an installation or create a paper collage; if you have 3D-models or hand-drawn sketches you could think of a comic strip or animation; and so on.
Don’t worry about making a wrong decision. Making a quick and intuitive choice is better than overthinking it. Write down in one sentence what you would like to do. We will read these sentences to each other before we continue with the next step.
11:45 Workshop Part02a: Practicing *Geschichtung*
In the next part of the workshop you will engage with your collected research materials and create a (digital, physical, sonic, visual, textual, virtual, …) collage, based on the format you have decided on.
Experiment with different ways of layering your material. Consider how you can layer and combine different media with each other within your format. Also consider layering your materials with a purely aesthetic outcome in mind, or try to visualize discursive connections by combining related and unrelated materials in new ways. Try to tell a literal, visual, or abstract story about your interest and your topic. Most of all, enjoy the process.
14:00 Workshop Part02b: Refining *Geschichtung*
Continue with your work and then prepare your *Geschichtung* for presentation (see next step)
17:00 Workshop Part03: Presentation *Geschichtung*
For the last part of the workshop please prepare a 3-minute presentation of your *Geschichtung* (in progress). (Please try to keep it within the 3 minutes. We will use a timer and will stop each presentation once the time is over.)
18:00 Goodbyes
@home
If you feel like your *Geschichtung* is not quite finished yet and you want to spend more time on it, please continue to develop it. Keep in mind what function this could have later on in your project. You might find the starting point for a visual style, identify a way of working or a new presentation format, create an artifact for your process documentation, or find new connections between different areas within your research.
